The Ocean Point 13 Mavericks made an impressive entrance onto the competitive scene this fall, going 5–2 in their first two tournaments and earning a position in the Gold Division of the SoCal Cup, competing successfully against both 13s and 14s teams. Led by Head Coach Matthew Azziz and Assistant Coaches Zach Rama and Grant Sloane, the Mavericks are building something special on the court, in the gym, and throughout the club community.
From the first whistle, it’s been clear that this group is about more than wins. Their coaches have emphasized development, discipline, and culture, and the boys have responded. “This team has shown tremendous growth this season. Their commitment to development, competitiveness, and team culture has been outstanding. Every week, they work hard to take small steps forward, and I am excited about the direction this group is heading,” remarked Head Coach Matthew Aziz. That growth has shown up in real ways: stronger ball control, more confident decision-making, and contributions from all 13 athletes, each of whom has played a meaningful role in the team’s early success.
Equally important, the Mavericks are playing together, supporting each other, competing with joy, and discovering what it means to build something bigger than themselves. Their chemistry has been a defining strength, whether in tough tournament moments or in the daily grind of practice.
The team has also embraced the volleyball lifestyle off the court. They recently traveled together to USC to watch Assistant Coach Zach Rama, an outside hitter for the UCLA Bruins, and Club Director Alex Knight, UCLA Assistant Coach, compete in a collegiate scrimmage versus UC San Diego and Vanguard. The experience deepened their connection to the sport and gave them a window into the intensity and excellence of volleyball at the highest levels.
Parents Bring the Support
Parents, too, have become an integral part of the Mavericks’ momentum. Ocean Point hosted a parent cocktail gathering to welcome new families, strengthen relationships, and build a unified, supportive community around the boys. That sense of togetherness is already shaping the season.

With the SoCal Cup Winter Formal Tournament approaching on December 12–14 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, the Mavericks are hungry, focused, and ready for the next challenge. If their first month is any indication, this team’s story is just beginning, and the future looks very bright.
